From the moment the organization of the American L1berty League was announced, the New
` Deal administration has sought to discredit and misrepresent the League. _From Mr. Roosevelt
himself on down through the New Deal hierarchy of spokesmen, fncludlng Ickes, Wallace and
Tugwell, thls attempt has been made continuously. EThe high pofnt of slanderous misrepre-
Esentatlon, thus far, was reached ln a speech opening the New Deal Convention at Philadelphia
by JameS A. Farley, New Deal National Chairman, who some months ago made the superfluous
announcement that this is to be one of the dlrtiest campaigns 1n history and who apparently
1s laborlng to make his prediction come true. Mr. Farley's statement was challenged by the
Executive Committee of the League meeting in New York on June 30th as follows:
_"Heretofore the American L1berty League has not attempted to defend itself
against the malicious defamation and vituperation uttered by spokesmen for the
New Deal. It glories 1n the fact that its advocacy of constitutional principles
has aroused the bitter enmity of men who would overthrow those principles.
There ls, however, one false accusation made by a man holdlng a responsible
public office which the League feels 1t necessary to call to definite attention.
"James A. Farley, Postmaster General of the United States, ln his capacity
as party Chairman, made the following statement 1n his speech opening the New
_Deal Convention at Philadelphia last week:
"'Behlnd the Republlcan ticket is the crew of the du Pont L1berty
League and their allies, which have so far f1nanced every under-cover `
agency that has disgraced American politics with the1r appeal to race
prejudice, rellglous lntolerance and personalities so gross that they
had to be repudlated by the regular Republican organization. They wlll ’
continue to dlsown these snaky assaults -- and to seek to profit by them.*
"Such false and defamatory language goes beyond the limit oflself-respect and
cannot remain unnoticed. It 1s incredlble that any man, no matter what his back-
ground, occupying hlgh official position would ln any circumstance make such re-
presentation without convincing evidence. I
"The American L1berty League challenges Mr. Farley to produce concrete evidence
1n support of his statement that the League has financed any 'unggr;cover agency
