on the third floor of King North in the staff lounge beginning at 9:30 a.m.
There will be a variety of baked goods for sale at reasonable prices as well
as coffee and tea. During the bake sale a fancy cake will be raffled. Mary
Geyer will be sending a sign-up sheet to each King department and to the
_ branch libraries asking for volunteers to make the baked goods. h 1
People wishing to join LSO or to renew their membership will be able to do so
during the bake sale. Dues are $5 per year.
GUATEMALAN WOMEN'S EXHIBIT IN GALLERY 1
C3randdaughters of Corn: Guatemalan Women and Repression, an exhibition of A
photographs by Marilyn Anderson and Jonathan Garlock, will be on display in
the Peal Gallery, King Library North, March 2-22, 1989. The exhibit focuses l
on the consequences of the repressive rule of the Guatemalan military regimes ·
on the everyday lives of women. It combines large portraits of Guatemalan
women with panels detailing the names and circumstances of hundreds of
disappeared women. The photographs have also been published in a book by the
same title by Curbstone Press in 1988. ·
Peal Gallery hours are 8-4:30 Monday-Friday; 8-12 noon on Saturday, March 4, i
and 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, March 5. The exhibit is jointly sponsored by the  
University of Kentucky Libraries and the Women Writers Conference and is free L
and open to the public. The 1989 Women Writers Conference will feature Latin }

The Center for Renaissance Studies at the Newberry Library in Chicago is
planning its sixth Graduate Student Conference for June 16-17, 1989. The A
` conference is interdisciplinary in scope and papers are invited in any area of A
medieval or Renaissance studies from graduate students in consortium _
universities. The deadline for abstracts is March 15, 1989; they should be ;

NEI-I IINSTITUTES FOR FACULTY
The National Endowment for the Humanities has announced its 1989 Institutes
for college and university faculty. The institutes provide opportunities for
intensive study of texts, historical periods, ideas, and issues central to
undergraduate teaching in the humanities. This year's institutes include,
among others, cover early American history, Buddhist thought, the French
Revolution, literary translation, Joseph Haydn, the Southern novel, Ottoman
history, and the visual arts. ‘
The institutes are sponsored by colleges, universities, libraries, museums, or
professional organizations and normally last four to eight weeks. Applicants
should apply directly to the institutes. Participants selected receive
stipends to cover travel, room and board.
