Medieval Manuscripts Temporal liturgy Pentecost Temporal from Gradual, 16th century (MS Latin Kentucky XII) text Identifier: MS LAT KY XII Summary: A partial Gradual, beginning at fol. 52, containing the liturgy from Pentecost through the 20th Sunday after Pentecost. Origin: 16th century, probably Spain Decoration: Full stave rubricated letters throughout. Full stave elaborate pen flourish letters (typical to Spanish graduals or antiphoners) throughout. Provenance: Purchased in Madrid, Spain, 1968, on the Calle de los Libreros with Library Associates' funds by Lawrence S. Thompson. Notes: Starts on fol. 52r. Rather than nesting the temporal markers within the staves, fol. 120 r is dedicated to the temporal marker for the 10th Sunday after Pentecost, written in rubricated letters, and formatted in a tapered shape, concluding with what looks like a modern comma. The opening of "Dum clamerent" is incorporated on this folio, and is repeated on the verso as part of the musical notation and lyrics. Although fol. 140 appears to be damaged, the text is intact. Evidence, such as the contemporary foliation and the hyphens to split words, suggests that this damage existed before the text was put to page. Missing the 16th Sunday after Pentecost. Numbers that do no correspond with pagination or foliation appear on fol. 68v (23, next to scu on last line), fol. 71r (154), fol. 72r (156), fol. 75v (9), fol. 77r (76). Script: Gothic texualis rotunda formata Support: Parchment Binding: Contemporary brown leather with brass bosses and clasps remaining. Restored in 1961. Layout: 6 lines of staves.
