Dr. Fred W. Rankin, I

Dear Fred:
Your elevation to the office of PresidentAElect of the American hedical
Association is a well deserved recognition of your diverse achievements in -
many fields of human endeavor. tAmong theee are renown in the Science and
- Art of surgery and an enviable position, lon; enjoyed, in organized med-
icine--achieved through the assertion of a dynamic personality. But in
L writing to commit to record my congratulations and best wishes which were M
inadequately expressed in person, I want to comnend a quality which has X
endeared you to a host of friends and which I believe will give you en-
tree to the hearts of the rank and file of your countrymen as you go
I about as the heai of American medicine. I have reference to the'hmmwn t
quality of unstilted friendliness. Such an attitude levels all barriers
and nukes all the world our kindsmen.
Of course, we of the South feel a peculiar pleasure heca se one of our A
own kind has been so signally honored. Ky ovn pride is boosted a notch
through the triple realization that an old friend, a fellow alumnus and
an unreconstructed rebel has scaled the topmost rung of world medicine.
With all good wishes for your health and happiness and looking forward
with keen anticipation of working with you,
I Cordially your friend,
