No matter what your major, no
matter what your style, Kennedy Book
Store has something for everyone. It‘s
the best place for students who are
one-stop shoppers. Kennedy doesn't
just have the biggest selection of new
and used books, it has a wide variety
of Wildcat apparel, souvenirs, class
supplies, gifts and game—day party

supplies found in the Wildcat Den.
Kennedy also offers services for stu-
dents such as copying and faxing.

“Kennedy Book Store was built
on having used books," said owner
Carol Behr. “We stock every book for
every class." Besides course text-
books. Kennedy carries related refer-
ence materials for specialized disci-
plines including law and allied health
fields.

Kennedy also has the Art Part
for art, interior design and architecture
students as well as the Greek Shop for
all you sorority girls and fraternity
guys.

“It's our experience and com-
mitment to the students that makes
Kennedy great," said Behr. Part of that
commitment includes offering a wide
variety of services to students.

Students can fax, copy. buy stamps
and phone cards. Not only does
Kennedy a0cept the plus account, they
give parents the option to leave their
credit card information for their student
to pay for things. Kennedy files the
information at the beginning of the
semester and the students can use it
whenever they shop at Kennedy.
(Don't get too excited students, par-
ents can put a cap on how much you
can spend.)

Kennedy Book Store has it all.
including a great location and plenty of
free parking. They also have extended
hours at the beginning of the semester
and will buy books back at any time.
With all of the features Kennedy has
and accommodations it makes for stu-
dents, it's no wonder it was voted the
best bookstore.

Dance for a Cause

Alisa Oerther I Kernel PR

Greek Sing is the one night of
the year when all the fraternities and
sororities come together for a good
cause. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon and
the Chi Omega chapters host Greek
Sing every year. All the money raised
goes directly to the Make a Wish
Foundation. “We choose Make A Wish
because it effects others on a national
level,” explained Logan Mayer the SAE
chairman. Mayer and Mallory
Bonbright worked many months plan-
ning the 2006 Greek Sing, which sold
5,700 tickets.

Greek Sing is a four-hour
dance competition. The competitors
are members of each fraternity and
sorority. Some teams start planning
and practicing in
December, even though
the competition isn't until
early spring. “The com-
petitiveness is what
brings the people and in
turn what brings the
money," said Mayer.
Since SAE and Chi 0

never left out of the dancing. They
perform a short dance together as an
intermission for the competitors. Pi
Beta Phi, with their Broadway theme,
was the 2006 overall champion. It was
their second year winning Greek Sing.
Sigma Pi won first place for the frater-
nities and Kappa Alpha Theta for the
sororities. Each receives a trophy and
bragging rights for the whole year.

Mayer felt that Greek Sing won
best event not only because it is the
most popular Greek event, but also
because it is for a good cause. Greek
Sing raised $30,000 for
the Make a Wish
Foundation. Many local
business and restaurant
sponsors, such as Office
Depot, helped raise the
money. Also, each ticket
and t—shirt bought went
directly to the fund.

“I hope that even
more people from the
University's community
will attend, including President Todd,
50 they can see that the Greek life is
more than partying," said Mayer. He
also hopes that they will have more
seating for next year since the 2006
Greek Sing was sold out. “We will sur-
pass our 2006 donation and we will
touch more people through this com-
petition."

As we enter into another school year

changes around campus: from construction to
new hot spots around town. New and exciting
places close to campus have arrived for stu-

vices apart from one another. Students may
remember seeing these places being con-
structed before leaving campus for the sum-

catchy name, offers the newest tanning in
town with a highly educated staff. Laura

the tanning bed, is well-educated on what
their beds offer. She knows which tanning

Salottos looks to be the new hot spot
in town. The atmosphere offers many differ-
ent personalities. which are all very intriguing.
As soon as you go through the front door of
the restaurant and lounge you will see a large
wooden bar accented by beautiful hanging
mirrors and shelves full of glassware.

Salottos has lavish booths and chairs, where
people can eat lunch, dinner or have a drink.
The front of Salottos is great for lounging with
friends during their much advertised happy
hour from 11 a. m. -7 pm.

Walk toward the back and you will
find a classy atmosphere with a large dance
room stocked with high powered music and
lighting equipment. A change from the front of
the bar to the dance area is perfect for sitting
and watching others or dancing all night long.

The newest and the most exciting
part of the bar is the patio out front. it is going
to be the largest front patio around town with
a great view of Limestone Street. Sitting out
on the patio will be great for day or night.

Salottos' kitchen serves food from 11
am. — 10 pm. Students will want to stop by.
because they have a menu out of this world
that includes baked shrimp oreganata, pesto
chicken panini and grandma and auntie's
manicotti. They have a 9 ounce filet mignon
for $19, which is a great price. And UK plus
accounts are welcome.

Aside from the great daily drink spe-
cials and the extensive menu. Salottos offers
something new no one else has in town: a
VIP package. “We have a limo service that
will pick you and your friends up." said owner
Chn‘s Benezet. He went on to say that they
offer different levels of VIP services: a bronze.
silver. gold and platinum. Each package
comes with unique benefits from Salottos.
And there are student discounts with the VIP
packages. This service would be great for
birthday, bachelor or bachelorette parties.

Overall, the staff is great. the atmos-
phere is outstanding and food was fit for a
king (or queen). Bring your friends for a night
of fun and dancing or just come in for happy
hour

This year's best band, Hundred
Dollar Handshake, offers a little bit of every-
thing: rock n' roll, blues, reggae and even
funk. Hundred Dollar Handshake was voted
best of UK for 2006. This band consists of
five guys that have been playing together
for about a year. Ryan Usher is the lead
guitar vocalist, Phil Brooks is at the bass,
Curtis Lowe on the saxophone, Elliot
Newman jams the drums, and Jonathan
Grossman plays the keyboard. You may
have seen Hundred Dollar Handshake at
The Dame, Two Keys Tavern or the
Fishtank. “Each of us contributes to writing

our own songs, ”explained Usher. At their
shows they play half covers and half their
own music. They don't have enough songs
to play a full set, but they are working on it.
Hundred Dollar Handshake has talent and
they are on their way to the top. Don't miss
them this month. Hundred Dollar
Handshake will be playing at Goodbarn

August 31. Don't pass up the chance to

Facebook: The New Comic Book—
of Our Time

There may be a reason why UK
voted Facebook the number one website
among students. The website has 2,500 col-
leges involved throughout the United States
with the number growing everyday and is
the seventh most visited website on the
internet.

“Facebook is an online directory
that connects people through social net-
works," states the Facebook homepage.
Students use the website to look up new
friends or people they have lost touch with.

“It's quite amazing," said Laura
Ludwig, a Psychology senior. “People have
contacted me that I have not seen or talked
to in over eight years.” Ludwig says she
gets on Facebook at least twice a day, but
many times more than that. “It is mainly
when l‘m sitting at my computer working on
a paper that | find myself drift to the web-
site."

Many students may find Facebook
addictive. With the growing numbers and
the increase in technology every day, what
is in store for the future? Soon computers
will be in every classroom and at every
desk. Students now find themselves on
Facebook during class lectures. Ludwig
talked about how she took a computer class

here at UK and majority of the students
were “facebooking” during the whole class
period. When our parents were growing up
the big class distraction was comic books.
Many teachers banned comic books from
classrooms and now that teachers find that
students are obsessing over the internet,
even in high school, the same problem aris-
es. ls the Facebook website the comic
book of our day?

While Facebook can be fun, inter-
acting with friends and surfing through peo-
ple's profiles, it does have its down-falls.
Students might think that merely creating a
profile for fun and posting pictures of them-
selves may be harmless, but because it is
over the worldwide internet there is nothing
to stop anyone from looking at your person-
al information. Any person can view what a
student does with their free time, be it a
marketer, a parent or college official. Many
of my friends that have graduated to go on
to find jobs have had to clean up their
Facebook site due to potential future
employers. It is becoming common practice
for a company to research a person before '
offering them a job and Facebook has
become a new tool for them to use.
Students have to clean up pictures of them-
selves and inappropriate “wall" quotes that
friends post.

Facebook is fun to collect friends
and find out what people have been up to.
Students post pictures of the latest great
time they had and it can be a fun way to
pass the time. Facebook being the most
popular website among UK students can be
harmless if used in the proper way. Just
remember that no section of the internet is
private. so be cautious of what is said or
shown on the website.

Get Hea thy at the Johnson Center

Being lazy in the summer is a given.
However. now that classes are getting back
in gear, students may feel the need to get
up and move.

Instead of
sitting in your room
all day watching
re-runs of your
favorite shows, get
out and pump
yourself up at the
Johnson Center.
Not only was it
voted Best Health
Club, there are
several reasons to
get off your rear
and go work out at
the Johnson
Center.

The first
reason is you are air. until 10 pm.
paying for access to the place, so why not
use it? The hours are perfect no matter
what your schedule. They open the doors at
6 am. and they don't close them till a whop-
ping 12 a.m. Monday through Friday. That’s
a whole 18 hours a day to sculpt your guns.
They are even open on the weekends —
Saturday from 10 am. to 9 pm. and
Sunday 11 am. to 10 pm.

Graduate assistants Adam
Lipschutz and Jason Brailey agreed that the
“variety of equipment offered to students" is

a big plus. Y‘ou pay for it, you should use
s"aid Brailey. The Johnson Center offers

a "'wide variety of cardio equipment and free

weights to fill every student‘s workout plan.

Other things students can take
advantage of are the indoor track and the
rock climbing wall. The wall staff gives
instruction to beginners and makes sure
that students are safe when scaling.

There are also little known activities
that few people take advantage of during
the school year. The Johnson Center offers
free aerobics, kickboxing and yoga classes
among others.

Sally Clark, a student supervisor

spoke of a new

called the “Time to
* Change program".
This program
focuses on chang-
ing your lifestyle
and eating habits.
Intramural
sports play a big
part with many
students. With
almost 30 sports
on the calendar of
events for this
upcoming school
year, 06-07 promis-
es to be a very
competitive year.
There are also three new events added this
year; the Home Run Derby, Team 3-point
contest and the Triathlon. Charlie Burk, the
intramural Manager, said that the most
important part of intramurals is "to just par-
ticipate." “Students should also be aware of
roster deadlines and on the lookout for
posters around campus and in the dorms"
Burk said.
When it‘s all said and done, there is
something for everyone at the Johnson
Center.
