Mr. Herndon Evans,
Sun Publishing Co.,
Pineville, Kentucky.
Dear Herndon:
We were very much interested to read in the Courier Journal
this morning an account of your actions in heading the society for pro-
tection of children. This is very commendable, indeed, and should call
to the attention of Dreiser and his collen{ues the fertile field for
yublicity projects which they have overlooked right at their door.
I hope you will have Governor Roosevelt's assurance of
protection before you and the me bers of your committee ven.ure into
the wilcs of New York City.
Let me wish you folks success, for you really are,in our
opinion, performing a service for the state of Kentucky in showin; this
matter up in its true liéht.
Kindest regards.
Yours very truly,

Dear Mr. Evans: .
I got quite a Kick out of the U. J.
story anent the "Society for Protection of Defenseless
Children." This move, without doubt, is the surest way
Pineville could have invented to laugh Dreiser and his
fellow asses out of the mountains.
These friends of humanity take themselves
very seriosuly, regardless of the rights of others.when
they decide to take on a little publicity. If they can
be ridiculed out of the hills before they have brought
about more trouble you folks will have accomplished a
real service.
Dreiser can do no good, but his affrontery
and desire to reclaim the coal industry is in keeping with
his ego. The rattle-brained asses who follow at his call
find their compensation in the glow of his reputation and
delight in seeing their names along with his on the front
page.
It would be pitiful if there was not a
real tragedy, far greater than "The American Tragedy" apt
to follow the "investigation" unless you people can
ridicule them out of the mountains.
i Hope things are coming along well with
you.
,_\` , Cordially yours,
Q y` \`

Dear Mr. Evans:
Yours retort administered to one Theodore
Dreiser, self styled investigator of the terrible conditions
in the Mountains of Kentucky, was one of the cleverest I
have ever seen. It made us feel good here to know that
Pineville citizens had suggested a counter investigation
of the children murderers of New York. But I have particular
reference to the manner in which you submitted yourself
for questioning and then turned the tables upon the
entleman himself. It was a verr shrewd and certainl

well planned attack. Some people here in Uinchester were
talking with me today about it and they all glory in your
spunk. We have no place anywhere in Kentucky for such
intelligentsia as Dreiser and his ilk.

Harlan, County, Kentucky `
Dear Sir:
II am a native born Kentuckian; spent my early life at Grant's Lick
in Campbell County, Kentucky. I have not forgotten my native state
and am still deeply concerned about all things affecting her people.
I want to congratulate you, and the people of your community, on the
way you handled Mr. Dreiser and his smelling committee,——smelling
with the stench of New York's Underworld. From newspaper reports,
I note the manner and attitude in which you received these emissaries
from the moral deadline, and I marvel at the patience and self—con—
trol exemplified by your good people, when challenged by this fetid
blast.
"All Glory to Old Kentucky".
I sincerely hope you are able to put over your investigation of the _
baby—killing gangsters of Gotham. I know this report would be a
contribution appreciated by the moral, decent, understanding men.and
women of not only your own state, but of every state West of the
» Hudson. Such a report would picture gangsters and gangland in their
proper light.
Of course, you would doubtless need in your part, persons who could
speak two or three well—known languages besides our native tongue.
The language of Pineville would not be understood in Gangland. Such
a report would also give a picture of the guardians of Law and lib- _
erty in Gotham; it would give their names, their breed, and back-
ground. This picture would show Taminyzdsing in all her glory out
of the scum and filth and mange of fifty years.of ignorance, yea,
*Abyssnal Ignorance”.
Yes, I sincerely hope you will be able to make this investigation.
Governor Roosevelt will offer you no protection. He wouldn*t want
Taminy and Taminy leaders to suspect that he was doing anything
to aid and abet the efforst of any fearless, law—respecting men to
peek in the shady realms of Taminy's domain.
Again congratulating you and your good people, I have the honor to
remain, A, V

I knO* nothin? of the merits of the economic struggle in Harlan County,
Kentucky, but can not refrain from congratulating you uoon your act comeback
yesterday, as reuorted in the New York Times of today, at the oublicity-seeking
camiaign of the world's most orolific nroducer of muddled English.
Some of your old subscribers may recall that about thirty years ago a mulatto
woman named Ida Nav ~ells collected a sizeable fortune `from gullible oersons
in England for the alleged ouriose of cutting an end to lynching in the United
States, and announced that she would brine over a committee of English men and
women to investigate lynchings in the Southern States. If 1 remember correctly,
Jeff Davis was Governor of Arkansas at the time and wut the smother on the visit
by giving a nevsoaser interview in which he said, in effect, that if the committee
visited Arkansas and stirred uw trouble it might receive first-hand demonstrations
of lynching tactics
‘inevil1e's wromwt organization of the "Society for the Rrotection of Defense-
less Children", following hard uoon the arrival of the se1f~aopointed investigators
. was a rich contribution to the gayety of nations. lt was a ty~icel b`t of I
fast-thinking iouthern sarcasm that must have made a hit with Irving Tobb, who
hails from “aducah or the Ree Wee Valley (or both) in Kentncky.

Meanv ile, the enclosed article in the Se~tember-October,issue of THE PANEL
containing statistics for which I was orimarily res~onsib1e, on the number of
, innocent bystanders hit by stray bullets alone from criminals in Greater New

yourself and the Committee.

Mr. Herndon Evans,

Pineville, Ky.
My dear Herndon:
Well I see that you are breaking into big print and are becoming
a national figure as an appointed delegate to investigate the
crime situation in New York. That seems to be a small assign-
‘ ment and I rather suspect you will be able to complete your in-
vestigation in a week and possibly correct this whole reign of
terror in the big city within the next $0 days. When you do,
your next job is that of President. If you will just stay clear
of Tgmmany and not get too clubby with Jimmy Walker, I am quite
sure you will carry the rural districts, which according to New
York includes everything outside of America's heaven. ‘
I am quite surprised to see that you wired Governor Roosevelt
”for full protection of the law.” Anyone coming from Harlan
County should be able to take care of himself, even in tme very
midst of gangsters.
I certainly do hope that you take good care of Mr. Dreiser and
his group. I am quite confident that they are in no way capable
of combating the sinister influences or defending themselves
» against the ”gun toters” of our own Kentucky Mountains. Don't
you think it would be well for you to get on the Governor's Staff
as an Agitant in order that you can see, personally, that our
dear literary group receives the proper and full protection?
I am quite interested in the outcome of both these investigations
and for this reason I am particularly anxious that you send me
each copy of the Pineville Sun, which I know will carry full de-
. .tails of the horrible, gruesome story which our New York friends
. Lhave marched on you to correct.
,We thoroughly enjoyed May's letter and am glad to report that p
.;Jane is now practically well. She certainly was a splend1d
` patient and never complained at all. Myrtle and Betty are well,

 Page No. 2
as am I. Give our love to May and M. W. I really think, if
you will pardon the family intrusion, before I put glasses on
Mary Wallis I would have a very competent eye doctor agree that
galsses are necessary. I have found from my own experience that
glasses have weakened my eyes rather than strengthened them, and
believe this opinion is almost universal.
Much love all around.
